I led a full-day workshop on digital journalism Friday for the University of Colorado at the invitation of Steve Outing.
Rob Denton storified tweets from the workshop (thanks, Rob!).
I referred during the workshop to various blog posts of mine as well as examples from some other journalists:
- Des Moines Register Parkersburg tornado map
- Andy Carvin Storifys on weapons in Libya and Gay Girl in Damascus
- Jenny Rogers list of things longer than the Redskins’ rushing total
- Sarah Larimer interactive account of the Chandra Levy murder trial
- The Machine Is Us/ing Us video
- Brian Stelter’s What I learned in Joplin
- Karen Workman’s blog post on using Google Voice
- My blog posts on thinking and working digital-first
- Twitter advanced search and my #twutorial post on using search
- Other #twutorial blog posts
- The 200-inch story I mentioned and the video follow-up 11 years later (which I didn’t mention, but they go together)
- My blog post on Andy Stetler’s use of Banjo for breaking news
- My blog post about the Pottstown Mercury’s wanted-poster Pinboard
- My tips on Facebook engagement
- My blog posts on showcasing your work, building your brand and job-hunting in digital journalism
- Socialcam and Snapchat, mentioned by Steve Outing during the workshop
I might have left out a few posts or examples that I mentioned. If you attended the workshop and recall something I mentioned that you don’t see here, let me know and I’ll add them.

Here are my slides from the workshop (some of which I didn’t show in the workshop because we skipped around a little):
I should add that Steve used Swivl, a tool I had not seen before, to make a video of my presentation. Steve placed his iPhone in the Swivl in camera mode (below) and I wore a remote around my neck and the tripod swiveled to follow me as I moved about. Very cool.

I didn’t realize I had that many chins. But I was looking down. Honest. I was in the pool!
