@statesman has shown again today how to use Twitter to cover breaking news.
In February, I noted the excellent job @statesman did in covering the terrorist attack on the IRS office in Austin. I was tied up in a meeting out of the office this morning, but I heard at a break about this morning’s situation with a gunman at the University of Texas library.
I knew right away that Robert Quigley, the voice of @statesman, the Twitter account of statesman.com, the website of the Austin American-Statesman, would be shining again. I quickly checked and saw that, indeed, he was all over the story. I don’t have time to analyze the coverage in the detail that I did before. But I commend the earlier study and today’s coverage to your attention if you are wondering how your news organization should use Twitter in covering breaking news. I will note, though, that last time I said it would have been good to use a hashtag, and this time Quigley made good use of the #UTshooter hashtag.
I will add one more thing: Mandy Jenkins posted a helpful account of how TBD used Twitter and other tools in our breaking coverage of the Discovery Channel hostage situation Sept. 1.
Read them both, review @statesman’s tweets today, and follow @TBD and @statesman and you’ll see how to use Twitter to cover breaking news. We also have a breaking story (a drive-by shooting) unfolding right now on TBD, and you can see the use of Twitter by following our Twitter account, the story on our site, and responses and retweets on Twitter.
