I will be leading a workshop on accuracy and verification today with Craig Silverman for Georgetown University.
My slides and Craig’s are below. Some resources Craig and I (and others) have developed to help journalists ensure accuracy:
- Craig’s Regret the Error blog (be sure to download his accuracy checklist).
- Craig’s Regret the Error column for CJR, especially this week’s Eight Simple Rules for Doing Accurate Journalism.
- Craig’s Regret the Business Error column for the Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.
- The liveblog, podcast and slides from Craig’s workshop for TBD and American University last year.
- My accuracy and verification tips.
- My accuracy checklist (inspired by Craig’s).
- Reuters Handbook of Journalism accuracy chapter.
- Jonathan Stray’s Measuring and improving accuracy in journalism.
- Mandy Jenkins’ Accuracy and accountability checklist for social media.
- Chip Scanlan’s Getting it Right: A Passion for Accuracy.
- Andy Carvin’s Storify curation (includes some good examples of using social media to vet and verify information).
- Poynter chat on handling inaccurate tweets.
- Eduardo Loara on the Error Prevention Project.
- Megan Garber’s Andrew Lih wants to wikify fact-checking.
Update: I omitted the Report an Error Alliance from the original version of this. What are some other resources for accuracy and verification that I should add?
Update #2: I highly recommend Jay Rosen’s We Have No Idea Who’s Right: Criticizing “he said, she said” journalism at NPR. It underscores a common failing in journalism today: stories that are accurate but fall short of journalism’s call to seek the truth and report it.
I also should thank Denise Li, outgoing associate dean of Georgetown’s Master of Professional Studies in Journalism program, for inviting me last year to join the Georgetown faculty. Friday was Denise’s last day (though she’ll be helping with today’s workshop). Denise did a terrific job, as she will whenever she decides on her next venture.
