It may take a while for me to learn to call Daniel Victor, my newest staff member, Dan. I’ve followed him on Twitter so long that I just think of him as @bydanielvictor.
Dan’s the latest recruit to the Allbritton Communications metro news operation (which Jim Brady says will have a name soon, perhaps today).
Dan will be a community host, joining hosts Jeff Sonderman and Lisa Rowan and social media producer Mandy Jenkins on our community engagement team. We should be hiring another host and a mobile producer soon.
I can’t remember when Daniel first came to my attention, but a year ago, when I led a webinar on Twitter for the American Society of News Editors, I listed him (slide 14 in that link) as a reporter that editors should follow.
Daniel, who covers Hershey, Pa., for The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, was a pioneering reporter in the outstanding BeatBlogging project based at New York University. I’m not sure whether I connected with him through a blog about the project or through other people’s tweets about his beatblogging work. But I have linked before to his blog and praised his resourcefulness in using digital tools, including these posts on how he used Twitter and Facebook effectively, with traditional reporting skills, to get strong stories. I love the way he engaged the community in his beat coverage as a reporter.
I’ve enjoyed watching his work from afar. I can’t wait to see it up close.

Thanks for the welcome. To clear things up: Daniel is the name I use in print/online, but I usually introduce myself as Dan. Really, though, I won’t lose much sleep if you call me Daniel. I honestly don’t notice.

Congrats to you for hiring Dan. It’s a big loss for South Central PA. He will be missed here. But at least we can still follow him on @twitter.
