An update on Maya Esther Poulter, my niece’s new daughter from Haiti: She is thriving in her new home and even adjusting to the Iowa winter.
ABC News, which played an instrumental role in helping Mandy and Matt Poulter find their adoptive daughter and bring her home, checked in with them Friday on Good Morning America. “We’re doing everything we can to shower her with love,” Matt told Roberts in a live interview.
As I have blogged before, Matt and Mandy had completed the adoption process before the Haiti earthquake and were planning to bring her home this month, after processing of her U.S. passport. ABC’s Robin Roberts found Maya’s orphanage after the earthquake and reported that she was safe. Mandy and Matt then flew to the Dominican Republic, and then into Haiti on an ABC helicopter, to bring Maya and four other orphans being adopted by Pella couples home to Iowa.
Mandy emailed an update and some photos to family and friends and gave me permission to share them:
As most all of you have heard… Maya is home after our 3 year wait!!! We are so excited to have her here at home with us. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since we flew into Pella with her in our arms. Most of you have been following Maya’s story in the news, but we wanted to send an update on her now that she is here and settling in.
She has been doing wonderful. She loves her brothers and sisters and spends most of the day just hanging out and playing with them. She wasn’t fond of our 2 dogs at first but now she will pet them.
She eats and sleeps very well and went sledding for the first time last week (adjusting to the cold Iowa weather was hard for her).
We had a family movie night with popcorn last night and she thought that was fun. She really enjoys coloring when the older kids are doing their school work.
She sings to us in Creole. I video taped her singing and dancing last night to a song she was singing in Creole. It will be fun to show her that when she is older.
She loves to laugh and have us chase her around the house. She likes piggy back rides and runs to Matt every evening when he comes in the door.
We are so very blessed to have her home with us after all she’s been through. It’s so nice to see her enjoying life like every 4 year old should!
We appreciate all the prayers and support we’ve received throughout our adoption process and especially during the week between the earthquake and bringing Maya home. We are still in awe of God and His mighty power. It amazes us at how He had his hand at work in every little step of bringing Maya home. Matt and I are truly humbled that He chose us to be Maya’s family.
Awesome! Just awesome 🙂
