If you’re not yet convinced of the value of Twitter as a news-gathering and storytelling platform, check out Mike Wilson’s (@2drinksbehind) account of the Denver plane crash. Vlogger Loïc LeMeur notes the difference between the tweets and standard coverage on CNN. Check out AP’s coverage, too.
I turned to the Rocky Mountain News more than 12 hours after the crash and the link from the lead position on the home page was still an AP account that made no mention of Wilson’s Twitter feed. (Might explain why Scripps is trying to sell the Rocky.)
Denver Post coverage was much better, with detailed story, photo gallery and appeal to survivors to share their photos and stories, but no Twitter reference.
Didn’t think until Sunday afternoon to check Chron.com to see how the Houston Chronicle was covering (flight was Houstson-bound). Chron page does include a link to the Twitter account. Not sure when that was posted.
The most compelling narrative of this news event was on Twitter. If you’re a reporter or editor and you’re not checking Twitter on the news events you cover, you may be missing the best eyewitness accounts. (And, of course, I was alerted to this Twitter narrative on Twitter, by @steveouting.)
