Breaking news Twitter training with @stevebuttry @mercnews # #twutorial @insidebayarea @cctimes twitter.com/tyska/status/2…

I led two workshops yesterday for Bay Area News Group journalists.
At the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif., I discussed ways for journalists who have started using Twitter to get better use of it. We discussed several topics I have addressed in recent #twutorial posts: search, hashtags, organizing the chaos, time management, building followers, how and what to tweet. (Time ran out before we talked about livetweeting in much depth, but that’s on the slides and I wanted to include the link since we did discuss it briefly.) Here are the slides I used:
In a second workshop at the San Jose Mercury News, we discussed engaging in breaking news (the link is about Twitter; I haven’t yet done a blog post on using all the other tools in the slides, but it’s on my someday-to-do list). I also referred briefly to my case study on Twitter use by @statesman in a 2010 breaking story. (Keep in mind that case study is more than two years old, so you would have some different tools to use now). Here are those slides:
In some fortunate timing, at the same time as the San Jose workshop, my former TBD colleagues Jeff Sonderman and Andrew Beaujon of Poynter published a preview of some Twitter data that will be released today at the Online News Association (watch for me to livetweet that). Their data underscored several things I noted in yesterday’s workshops, about how hashtags, sharing links (not just your own) and livetweeting increase engagement.
Thanks to George Kelly and others who tweeted about the workshops:
“I hope @stevebuttry doesn’t conduct our workshop in pirate…” @dmjreports wishes aloud.

Interesting thought from @stevebuttry – If a business is in the news, check Foursquare: the mayor could be a good source. #DFM #Twutorial
