Nooooo! I love the three-word policy, John. It covers stupid snarkiness without needing elaboration. Some snarkiness is just fun and worth keeping as part of the social-media conversation (OK, maybe I'm trying to justify my own snarkiness).

A good editor looks at a writer's grammar, facts and tone. Seems to me that a good editor would question him more closely to make sure his opinions are supported...and advise him to remove the sarcasm and snideness from his email responses to fellow journalists.

I'm thinking I need to change my social media policy to read, "Don't be stupid or snarky."

Certainly, covering things we can't learn firsthand is part of journalism. In the agriculture example I used, I visited farms but didn't actually learn how to farm (and some writers who knew farming wrote more authoritatively than me).

But here's where your comparison falls apart: Space journalists could go into space, but they worked their asses off to understand their topic, and I'm sure the best spend (or spent, since we don't cover space nearly as much now) considerable time in Houston & Cape Canaveral, learning as much as they could about space. A few thousand people in NASA were more knowledgeable them but they made the effort to understand & wrote authoritatively to the general population.

But learning about Facebook is not only possible but easy. A half billion people, probably more, know more about Facebook than Bill Keller. So he shows his ignorance to most of his audience. When you can't learn firsthand, you need to work hard to learn by less effective means. Keller passed on learning firsthand and then read or talked to a few people who agreed with him. I stand by my assessment that that was lazy journalism.

Dear Mr. Buttry, your fiery argument seems to be that only such journalists who have been to space should be allowed to write about space exploration. Silly me, I always thought that part of the journalistic work involved covering themes that (quite often) are alien to the poor journalist put on the assignment.

Is it Luddite nitpicking to note that Keller misused "affect" in this sentence?

"It should not be immune from scrutiny for its affect on the culture or for its behavior as a business."

But that may go to the issue of less editing in the digital side of the force.
